Taking care of ourselves

April 11, 2009

Our culture supports doingness. It supports putting yourself last. It supports ignoring your own needs in order to meet the needs of others. Put another way, we are taught to meet our commitments and obligations, even if that means denying our own needs.

I woke up with a head ache this morning. I lay in bed wondering what it might be about, or where it was coming from. Was I judging myself unkindly? Was I critical of myself for some choice or action? Was there something I was scared about? Was I out of balance from focusing too much on one area of my life and neglecting others?

How do we support each other in learning how to take better care of ourselves?

How many of us, if we wake up with a head ache in the morning, feel we have the option to take care of ourselves by looking into the cause and adjusting our life in some way to relieve the pain?
